Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
What is Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)

What Is Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)?

Scaling and root planing, often called a deep cleaning, goes beyond a routine cleaning to treat gum disease. It removes bacteria, tartar, and debris from below the gumline and along the tooth roots, where a standard cleaning cannot reach. Using soft tissue lasers and specialized instruments, we clean deep periodontal pockets so your gums can heal and reattach. For many patients, it is the key first step in reversing early gum disease.

The Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)

Disease Control

Deep cleaning stops the progression of gum disease and helps prevent the tooth loss it can cause.

Healthier Gums

Removing bacteria below the gumline reduces inflammation and helps your gums reattach to your teeth.

Fresher Breath

Clearing out the bacteria trapped in deep pockets addresses a common source of persistent bad breath.

Whole-Body Health

Reducing harmful oral bacteria supports your overall health, since gum health is tied to the body.

Our Step-by-Step Process

From your first exam to the final result, here's exactly what to expect — calm, clear, and never rushed.

  1. 01

    Exam and Imaging

We start with a thorough exam and X-rays to measure your pockets and plan the cleaning.

  2. 02

    Gentle Numbing

We apply local anesthesia so you stay comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.

  3. 03

    Deep Cleaning

Using our soft tissue laser and specialized tools, we remove bacteria and tartar above and below the gumline.

  4. 04

    Healing Support

The laser minimizes bleeding and speeds healing, and we plan any follow-up your gums need.

Signs You May Need Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)

Bleeding Gums

Your gums bleed regularly when you brush or floss.

Deep Pockets

Your periodontal measurements fall outside the healthy range.

Receding Gums

Your teeth look longer as the gums pull back and expose the roots.

Chronic Bad Breath

Persistent bad breath does not improve with a regular cleaning.

  • 5 out of 5 stars. “Hi everyone. I just had the most amazing dental treatment experience yesterday at Elite Dentistry in RSM, thanks to the wonderful Dr. Mehran Rastegar Lari and his whole team who made my experience pain free and friendly, really welcoming. And I'm talking about hygienist Michelle, and RDA Nayeli, (not sure of the name), and Irene and Yesenia in the front office. If you want a friendly and stress free experience, this is the place! And if you want the latest high tech equipment and procedures to not only ease the pain, but speed up the process -- especially when it comes to the need for cutting and replacing / building new crowns, this is the place! And I just can't say enough about Dr. Lari, I mean, he's a master. Honestly, I have a long previous history of experiencing dental treatment of all kinds, of the associated pain, of the stress and anxiety whenever I'd be under the drill. Or the long wait while dentists would need to take impressions, of having all that ordeal of having your mouth filled with cold thick stuff like plaster, waiting for the mold to form. And on and on. But wow, not only didn't Dr. Lari need to take impressions, but he uses a "scanner" inside the mouth to build the model of the teeth digitally in another way. This is wild, and amazing, and so much faster! And so much more comfortable.Even his way of numbing the gums around the teeth seemed less invasive, less painful. It honestly wasn't painful. I remember him using his laser machine device, and it seemed that all processes were faster. And one thing I had never experienced until yesterday was having great well fitting crowns made in-office, fitted and emplaced all on the same day! I was blown away by the technology he has on site, and his -- and his staff's -- expertise in using these latest cutting edge tools. But I think the biggest thing for me was Dr. Lari's friendliness, his care for me as a patient, and that goes for all his team too. Really, I can't say enough about this practice. You guys are the best. Thank you so much, Dr. Lari and team :)” — Christopher

The check-in process was quick and efficient, and they took the time to answer all my questions about my insurance and treatment options. The dental hygienist who attended to me was not only professional but also incredibly gentle and attentive. She explained each step of the cleaning process, ensuring I was comfortable throughout. Her thoroughness and expertise made a significant difference in my experience, and I appreciated her tips on maintaining oral hygiene.Dr. Lari and his assistant Nayeli were equally fantastic. They took the time to review my dental history and conducted a comprehensive examination. His approach was patient-centered, and he made sure to discuss any concerns I had, providing clear explanations of potential treatments without any pressure. You've Got Questions, We've Got Answers

Don't see the answer you're looking for? Call us at (949) 888-8989.

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above the gumline to maintain healthy teeth. A deep cleaning goes below the gumline to treat gum disease when a standard cleaning is not enough.

Is a deep cleaning painful?

No, we use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Mild soreness or sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and easy to manage.

Is deep cleaning done in stages?

For moderate to severe gum disease, yes, a phased approach is often more effective. Dr. Lari may sequence treatment over several visits so your gums can heal between sessions.

How soon will I see improvement?

Many patients notice less swelling and bleeding within the first few weeks. Consistent home care and follow-up visits help lock in those results.

Does insurance cover deep cleaning?

Most plans cover at least part of scaling and root planing, since it is considered medically necessary. Our team will help you review your benefits and maximize coverage.

What Happens If You Don't Address Gum Disease Before Other Dental Work?

Untreated gum disease creates a compromised foundation for any additional dental work. When bacteria and inflammation persist beneath the gum line, placing crowns, veneers, or other restorations over diseased tissue can lead to complications, including accelerated bone loss, implant failure, or the need for extraction later on. This is why Dr. Lari prioritizes gum health first, treating any periodontal concerns before moving forward with cosmetic or restorative dentistry. Addressing these issues upfront ensures your investment in other treatments is protected and your smile remains healthy long-term.

What Can You Expect After Deep Cleaning and Periodontal Therapy?

One of the most rewarding aspects of treatment is seeing the visible improvement in your gum health. After deep cleaning and periodontal therapy, many patients notice reduced swelling, less bleeding during brushing, and a healthier appearance to their gums within the first few weeks. Dr. Lari will monitor your healing progress during follow-up visits and may take updated X-rays or perform new measurements to confirm that your gums are responding well to treatment. Your involvement in this process, through consistent home care and follow-up appointments, plays a crucial role in maintaining these improvements and preventing disease recurrence.
